Ryder Cup - Golf Digest Special
The Ryder Cup is here and even though Team USA will have the homefield advantage at Valhalla, they will have their hands full with a strong European Team. This years Team USA will feature six Ryder Cup Rookies, including La Quinta High School grad Anthony Kim, who played multiple courses in the Palm Springs area throughout his amateur career. The other rookies include Boo Weekly, Hunter Mahan, J.B. Holmes, Steve Stricker, and Ben Curtis as they will be met by a European team headlined by Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia. It will be a tough match for the U.S., as Team Europe has won 5 of the last 6 matches, the previous two in blowout victories.

Â
This is one of the truly unique events in golf, as the focus shifts from individual achievements to team play and different match formats. During the Ryder Cup, all games are played under Match Play rules, where the result of each game is determined by the number of holes won. The first two days will feature Foursomes in the morning and Fourball in the afternoon. The final day’s play will be in Singles format. “Fourball” play is a where each member of the two-man teams plays their own ball, and four balls are in play per hole with each of the four players competing. The team whose player has the lowest score on that hole wins the hole. If players from each team tie for the best score, then the hole is halved. “Foursomes” play is a match where two golfers play together against two other golfers and each team plays one ball. The golfers play alternate shots (player A hits tee shot, player B hits second shot, etc) until the hole is played out. Team members alternate playing the tee shots, with one golfer hitting the tee shot on odd-numbered holes, and the other hitting the tee shot on the even-numbered holes. The team with the better score wins the hole. Should the two teams tie for best score, the hole is halved. “Singles” is a match in which one player competes against another player. A player wins the match when he is up by more holes than there are holes remaining to play.
