JC Resorts & JC Golf in San Diego

In 1971, James Colachis was a successful entrepreneur, looking for his next big real estate conquest. His idea started out as San Diego-based JC Resorts—taken from Colachis’ initials.

Nearly 35 years later, JC Resorts and its branch-off, JC Golf, now own or operate seven golf courses, each with its own distinct character but all sharing Colachis’ signature standard: when golfers play a JC Golf course, they can expect the same condition quality at all courses and special touches that tie each together. All incorporate Bermuda Grass fairways and poa annua bent greens, stone or wooden bridges placed throughout, natural riparian habitats are promoted and housing doesn’t impede or affect course playability.

Golfers can also expect first class hospitality. “It’s something that we take very seriously,” says John McNair, vice president of golf for JC Golf, “and I think people take notice of that quality at our courses. Because we, the management, are local and present, we’re able to feel the pulse of the operation through the feedback from the players.”

SIT BACK, RELAX, AND STAY A WHILE…

Golf in San Diego

Rancho Bernardo Inn

Rancho Bernardo Inn in northern San Diego was the first course acquired. “Being the entrepreneur and businessman he was,” McNair says, “James Colachis really expanded the Inn.” The current expansion of Rancho Bernardo Inn includes a new 10,000-square-foot ballroom overlooking the Inn’s golf course, a new lap pool, and a complete overhaul of the spa, fitness facility and its 287 guest rooms, all slated for completion by spring 2007.

RBI is also home to El Bizcocho, the Zagat Survey’s highest-rated San Diego restaurant and voted “Best of the Best” by San Diego Magazine. This classic dining destination features seasonal farm-to-table specialties, including seafood delicacies and Certified Angus Beef® steak. It’s all complemented by a renowned wine list.

The casual Veranda Fireside Lounge & Restaurant overlooks the golf course and is ideal for dining throughout the day and for cocktails by the fire under the stars.

The 6,631-yard traditional-style Resort Course was built in 1962 by William F. Bell and has since undergone two redesigns and renovations; the most recent was a Schmidt-Curley effort that produced a new set of tees and resculpted bunkers.

BIG THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES…

Across the street from RBI, Oaks North Golf Course Head Professional Lloyd Porter knows the reason why his executive course is so popular:“It doesn’t take as long for people to play here and it’s a great, easy course to walk,” he notes, especially for its older clientele. Because it is located in The Oaks senior living community, the average age during the week is 75. “The pace is three to three-and-a-half hours and golfers like that they don’t have to make a whole day of it.”

The 27-hole,3,608-yard Ted Robinson, Sr. design features six par-3s and three par-4s on each nine, and players can expect to use any or all of the clubs in their bags to make their way through six lakes and mature pines, sycamores and eucalyptus trees.

Oddly enough, for a course within a senior community, “We have a great junior program and it’s a great course for family and kids, especially kids just learning how to play golf,” Porter says.

Oaks North isn’t the only short course in JC Golf’s portfolio; Escondido’s par-3, 2,582-yard Reidy Creek Golf Course, a scaled-down version of regulation courses featuring water hazards and numerous bunkers, provides challenge for even the most skilled golfers. According to Golfweek’s James Achenbach, Reidy Creek is “the best 18-hole par-3 layout I have ever seen!”

A TRIP TO THE COUNTRY…

Temecula Creek Inn

Temecula Creek Inn

In the early 1980s,JC Resorts purchased its third property, Temecula Creek Inn, tucked into Southern California wine country. True to form, Colachis upgraded the Inn, by first constructing the Stonehouse nine which opened in 1990 (named for the century-old stone house off of the par-

3 sixth tee) and building 50 more rooms, bringing the total to 130. A new ballroom was constructed as well.

There are three nine-hole routings at TCI, making 18-hole combinations that range from 6,246 yards to 6,741 yards. Designed by Ted Robinson, Sr. and Dick Rossen, each has its own distinct character. The Creek Course is the more traditional of the three with its adjoining fairways, while both the Oaks and Stone House courses feature elevation changes, undulating fairways and the utmost privacy. A short drive away, visitors can partake in hot-air balloon rides, antiquing, or wine tasting at one of the nearby vineyards.

THE MORE, THE MERRIER…

When Encinitas Ranch Golf Course opened in 1998, it became one of the county’s most popular courses–owned by the City of Encinitas, the 6,587-yard Cary Bickler design hosts more than 70,000 rounds a year.

The course is built on Ecke Ranch, donated by the Ecke family, which is famous for being the world’s largest poinsettia growers. Part of that poinsettia farm remains off the ninth green, and twelve other holes have ocean views.

“We get a lot of compliments about the playability of the course and how the player shot their lowest round ever,” says Head Professional Rod Linville, who also notes that players are fans of the wide fairways and minimal rough. “It’s fun to hear about the golf accomplishments players

meet out here. The playability also helps pace move along.”

Meeting golfing goals can be done at JC Golf School on Encinitas Ranch property. Headed by PGA Director of Instruction John Mason—named one of the 50 Best Instructors in California by Golf Digest—the school has its own practice facility, complete with practice bunkers and short fairways, greens and driving range.

Twin Oaks Golf Course

Twin Oaks Golf Course

Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos was built in 1993 by Ted Robinson, Sr. The 6,535-yard course is constructed upon an old horse ranch, and despite being built in a community, 4,000 mature, well-placed trees “eliminate the feel that you are in a housing tract,” says JC’s Director of Golf Maintenance Bob Dobek.

When building the course in the early 1990s,an Indian kitchen with grinding stones was uncovered on the sixth hole, adding a focal point for players.

ON THE HORIZON…

JC Golf has reached outside its Southern California borders for the first time into Tucumcari, NM, where it was involved with 12 Shores Golf Club on scenic Ute Lake from the very beginning.

“This project is very exciting,” Dobek says. “There will be Nicklaus-designed golf courses, a marina, an equestrian center, and homes. It’s going to change the area there.”

JC Golf is also looking into acquiring properties in Orange County and the Coachella Valley.

“Each course we have is a little special and unique and each course has a different market segment,” McNair says. “I think that’s part of what makes us–and will continue to make us—popular. No matter where they go, golfers can expect the same great experience at any of our courses.”

Showtime Golf Announces New Torrey Pines Golf & Hotel Package!!!

Getting a tee time at the legendary Torrey Pines Golf Course© has always been close to impossible. Years ago, the only way to get a tee time was through a seven day phone-in lottery system at either 5am in the morning or 7pm at night. But recent, actions by the city of San Diego has limited the non-resident tee times to only 30% of all play at the famous course located on the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, California. Now, depending on the day, there are only as many as 7 tee times per course available to the non-resident golfer looking to book a tee time.

Showtime Golf has been booking tee times at Torrey Pines for the past 8 years and now has a new option for non-residents looking to play the world famous Torrey Pines Golf Course, host of the 2008 U.S. Open (if availability warrants). Here are the 2 options for non-resident golfers (outside the “city” of San Diego) to book reservations at Torrey Pines North and/or South Golf Courses.

Option #1: 8-90 day advanced reservations. Showtime Golf will act as your liaison with the city of San Diego parks and recreation department to coordinate tee times for anywhere from 1 to 8 players. Times are very limited (7 per course per day) and availability can take up to 72 hours to acquire, but both North and South courses can be booked through this process.

A $25 non-refundable deposit/reservation fee will be assessed from Showtime Golf for non-residents and a $41 non-resident fee from the city of San Diego. The green fee will be charged at the golf course upon check-in (carts cost $40 and are optional). If you are unable to make your tee time, no further money will be owed other than the before mentioned non-refundable deposit/reservation fees. Rates are as follows:

* Non-Resident Pricing North: Mon – Thu: $161, Fri-Sun & Holidays: $185

* Non-Resident Pricing South: Mon – Thu: $240, Fri-Sun & Holidays: $284

Pricing includes all deposit/reservation fees.

Option #2 (NEW): 14-90 day golf/hotel package reservations. For those individuals who don’t yet have a hotel booked, Showtime Golf is proud to offer this great package within walking distance to Torrey Pines. In fact, upgrades to a “Fairway View” room may also be available. In addition to the 7 tee times mentioned above (option #1), additional tee times each day are reserved for this golf/hotel package and if available, can be guaranteed up to 90 days in advance. All leftover tee times not sold via this golf/hotel package must be given back to the city of San Diego at the two week point, so book early if you can!

This fabulous golf & hotel package includes golf for 2 players at Torrey Pines (North or South), all reservation fees, hotel room for 2 nights at the close by 4 Diamond Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, a sleeve of golf balls per person, $10 cash card to GolfSmith per person (in-store or on-line), & a 12-month subscription to Golf Digest per household. (Carts are not included in this package, but may be rented in the golf shop for $40 per cart upon check-in).

This Torrey Pines Golf/Hotel Package offered through Showtime Golf must be pre-paid and is non-refundable once confirmed. All prices are per person, per night (based on double occupancy) and require a 2 night minimum. Package rates vary depending on day of week and hotel demand, but start from as little as $169.99.

Weekday Golf/Hotel Package:

North Course starts from $169.99

South Course starts from $199.99

Pricing is per person, per night (based on double occupancy) and requires a 2-night minimum.

In all the above options, it is best to have a second option in case there are no available times at Torrey Pines on the day(s) requested. In fact, if Showtime Golf isn’t able to book you at Torrey Pines they’ll take $10 off per person at any other golf course in town.  You must mention Promo Code “TP10” for this offer.

About Torrey Pines Golf Course

Torrey Pines, long recognized as one of the nation’s foremost municipal golf facilities, is truly a “golfer’s paradise”. Bounded by mountains to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west, the seaside golf courses are often swept by sunshine or by rain, fog, and chilling winds. Nature lovers can spot wildlife and the famous Torrey Pines trees that are indigenous to San Diego area.

Torrey Pines consists of two picturesque 18-hole golf courses, the North Course and the South Course, set on the cliffs of La Jolla, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Along with fabulous golf, the facility offers one of the largest on-course golf shops in the nation, advance golf reservations, expert instruction, and a double sided driving range. The Torrey Pines complex was designed and built by Billy Bell in the 1950′s.

The Torrey Pines South Course boasts dramatic coastline views as well as some of the most challenging golf in the country. In 2001, renowned golf course designer Rees Jones set his signature upon the course and the accolades on his work have not stopped since. Rees has added his own personal touches, in order to create a championship level of golf. The Torrey Pines South Course hosted 2008 United States Open Championship.

The Torrey Pines North Course is one of the most scenic golf courses on the California coastline. Several holes on the North Course are situated high atop the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean yet less expensive than Torrey Pines South Course. Many golfers think the North course boasts better views but it is fact that the North Course will not be as challenging as Torrey Pine’s South Course.

Congrats to Seo for her 1st LPGA title at La Costa Golf Resort & Spa!

Hee Kyung Seo win's the inaugugural KIA CLASSIC Presented by J Golf.

Sponsor's exemption Hee Kyung Seo won her first LPGA event Sunday when she shot a 12-under 276 to win the inaugural KIA Classic Presented by J Golf by a resounding six shots over Inbee Park.

She did it! Hee Kyung Seo shot a two under on Sunday for a final 12-under to beat out Michelle Wie and the rest of the LPGA field this past weekend at one of San Diego’s premier Golf Resorts, La Costa Resort & Spa. This was only Seo’s 8th tour start.

“It is amazing. I had only dreamed about this, but it came true,” said Seo, who earned $255,000 US for the win. “I just feel so good and happy. I really appreciate J Golf and Kia giving me this great opportunity to play here [La Costa].”

Michelle Wie closed within 4 strokes of Seo after a birdie on the 8th hole, but was later hit with a penalty for grounding her club  in a hazard which ended up costing her almost $90,000 in winnings. Wie ended her round even-par on Sunday for a final 4-under for the tournament.

Four years removed from hosting a professional golf tournament, La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad is back in the national sporting spotlight. La Costa has hosted plenty of professional golf events in its time, including the CBS Golf Classic in 1965 and the Haig Scotch Mixed Foursome Championship from 1965-1967. Then came its longest-running tournament that attracted the PGA Tour’s best from 1969-1998, known first as the Tournament of Champions and later as the Mercedes Championship. The Accenture event graced its fairways from 1999-2006 before moving to Tucson, AZ.

“I’m very excited about the LPGA returning to the San Diego area for the Kia Classic presented by J Golf,” says Paula Creamer, who finished ninth on the tour’s money list in 2009. “J Golf has made a tremendous commitment to women’s golf with this event, and with their support, and a spectacular host site like La Costa Resort and Spa, this tournament promises to be world-class in every way. 2010 is going to be an exciting year for the LPGA and we’re all thrilled that it will get started in the San Diego area!”
